Several Suggestions for Very Effective Labels
The new ANSI standards for safety labels emphasize custom design. The standard suggests that you add an Action statement, consequences, a symbol, use mixed case and, in many situations, add emergency information.
To make your labels as effective as possible, follow these seven secrets. Click on the headings.
1. Stress Action

Clear instructions are essential; reveal exactly what the viewer must do in order to maintain safety. It is extremely important that the label convey an action. A label must ensure that the viewer does not come into danger, so it must be clear and convincing.

2. Employ symbols

A symbol will be an extremely valuable contribution to your label, and will allow your meaning to be perceived more easily. Additionally, a symbol will allow your message to be conveyed to a large number of viewers who would otherwise be at great risk for lack of understanding.

3. Use an Effective Header

The header will draw the attention of the viewer to your safety message. Choose your header carefully so that your any hazard will be quickly noticed and understood.
    5. Write Simply.

Avoid using complex phrasing.  For example, “Wear Safety Goggles” will be more effective than “Safety Goggles Are Required”.  Word choice should be clear and direct to avoid confusion.  Give specific instruction such as “Respond within one minute”, as opposed to the imprecise and unclear “Respond quickly”.

6. Display Information in Case of Emergency

A telephone number should always be presented with your safety message. This allows any danger to be reported immediately to the appropriate person and can potentially save lives.

4. Explain the Consequences

Give the viewer a reason for your warning. Your label should convey the dangers of the circumstance to your viewer and describe the results when instructions are not met with compliance.

7. Use the Correct Material

You may pay more to have your label delivered and mounted than for the label itself. Ultimately, buying a more durable label will save you from the expense of reinstallation.
